David Jones has slashed prices up to 50 per cent ahead of the closure of its landmark department store at Westfield Mt Gravatt (formerly Garden City shopping centre).

And it has promised a mega three weeks of discounts after the Boxing Day sales, right up until the store pulls down its shutters for the final time on January 15.

When the department store closed at Toowong Village last year customers stripped the shelves after a massive response from locals in the final days of its 36 years at the westside location.

Hot bargains included a Sealy Posturepedic bed marked down from $5645 to just $2260.

Sheridan sheets and Luigi Bornoli-branded glassware were 50 per cent off, while a Gordon Ramsay/Maze Royal Doulton 12 piece set was reduced to $131.

The store even had sales on its branded chocolates range.

A DJs spokesman said details of the post-December 26 sales would be revealed closer to the time, but confirmed it had already begun reducing prices on selected items by 50 per cent.

Westfield confirmed on Monday (November 21) that it had lodged a development application to gut both levels of the department store and convert the enormous space to fit seven “mini major’’ tenancies.

The seven tenants, as well as four smaller specialty stores, have not yet been revealed.

David Jones announced a major restructure several years ago as it battled competition from online shopping and Covid, including the closure of its store at Toowong in 2021 after 36 years.

Sinclair Planning said in the development application (DA), lodged earlier this month, that

there would be three mini-major tenancies on level 1 and two specialty stores, with the other four mini-majors and two more specialty stores on level 2.

Travelators between levels 1 and 2 would be removed and the void enclosed.

The facade of an adjoining mall entry would also be “refreshed’’ and the outside facade on level 2 pulled back internally to create a terraced area, allowing natural light into the space.

Some changes would be made to parking next to level 1, removing two parents-with-prams spaces, while the overall floor area would be reduced by 450 sqm.

Woolworths Holdings, which bought David Jones in 2014 for about $2 billion, said its fashion and apparel businesses in Australia continued to deliver sales above pre-Covid levels.

In late 2019, DJs reopened its Carindale store with an Australian-first concept featuring concierges, a cafe and even refreshments served in the fitting rooms.
