Bargains galore as DJs closes Toowong department store

Canny shoppers have nearly picked the shelves clean ahead of David Jones shutting its doors on Friday but there are still some deals to be found.

Word has spread fast about David Jones’ last sale at the department store it has run in Brisbane’s westside since 1991.

When Westside News checked out DJs at Toowong Village on Wednesday afternoon a crowd of customers was picking through the last bargains.

DJs will close the shutters for good at 5.30pm on Friday (June 18) as part of a national strategy to reduce its physical footprint and focus more heavily on online sales.

Woolworths will open a full-line supermarket on the gallery level currently occupied by David Jones, late next year.

Fresco will open an Asian and western fresh food and grocery supermarket on part of the level 1 space which DJs also leased.

Tenants for the remaining level 1 space are yet to be announced.

Despite row after row of empty shelves, there are still plenty of good buys to be had _ for now.

A Sealy Posturepedic bed which normally sells for $5645 was marked down to $2260, while DJ’s brand and Luigi Bornoli-branded glassware were 50 per cent off.

DJs is even selling its branded chocolates range.

Sheridan cushions were still available late yesterday, as are other brands’ sheets, with prices slashed by up to half.

There was still plenty of kitchenware for sale on Wednesday, including Kleenaid items such as a food processor marked down to $229.

A Gordon Ramsay/Maze Royal Doulton 12 piece set was reduced to $131.

Limited women’s casual shoes, quality children’s clothes and a large range of men’s Levis jeans and jackets were still for sale, with $99 jeans reduced by 30 per cent.

A wide range of lingerie, cosmetics and some jewellery was also on offer.

Toowong Village has upgraded its ageing travelators and made other changes as the area prepares for a major retail development boom, including the massive Toowong Town Centre retail/residential/commercial/cinema project which will be built opposite.
