An old rundown site in a rejuvenated bayside suburb is set to make way for a new drive-through cafe and retail project as the influx of developers in one of Brisbane’s most rapidly changing areas continues.
Construction has started at 137 Glenora St, Wynnum with several food and drink retail tenancies, which will also feature outdoor alfresco dining under the existing fuel canopy, to be built in the coming months.
The project from Bikash Pandey, who also owns Carport Cafe at Cannon Hill, was approved by the Brisbane City Council last year.
The redevelopment, which will feature four tenants and 24 carpark spaces, will take over the site, where a coffee truck and the Glenora St Market Place have sat since October last year.
Glenora St Market Place will continue to operate at the revamped site.
Councillor for Wynnum Manly, Peter Cumming (ALP), said he was excited about the project, which showed the level of confidence the private sector has in the area.
“The current generation of planners must have a different attitude to the past generation,” he said.
“New developments are being approved and built, old shops are being renovated and new tenants moving in.
“This is a boom town and you better believe it.”
The project is expected to create up to 30 jobs for baysiders once complete.
But Cr Cumming also took a shot at council, saying previous owners of the land had the right to be upset after other proposals were knocked back because the site was zoned low density residential.
“Council does not want commercial development to spread to the north side of Glenora St,” he said.
“Also Glenora from Allen St to Tingal Rd is all commercial uses with a bakery, a coffee shop, a mini supermarket or corner shop and a hardware shop yet the council attitude to commercial development has always remained the same.
“If it were to change now there would need to be a good reason why, any previous owners who had been knocked back would have every right to be upset.”
Council’s City Planning Chair Krista Adams said 137 Glenora Road, Wynnum has operated commercially for decades, including as a service station in the 1950s and more recently a gym.
