A popular suburban shopping centre on Brisbane’s southside has unveiled a bold new $15 million plan to replace a major retailer shuttered since mid-2020.
Calamvale Central shopping centre manager Retail First Pty Ltd detailed its plans to move on from last April’s shock closure of Big W and acrimonious fallout in an application to Brisbane City Council on February 19.
Under the plans, the 7000 sqm formerly taken up by Big W would be divided between 10 new tenants, six of them new food and drink offerings organised in a new “market-like” configuration to be called Calamvale Laneway.
The other four tenancies would consist of a “major tenancy, mini major tenancy and two speciality tenancies”, according to the planning documents.
In a statement to the Southern Star, Retail First managing director Steven Bridges said the plans for Calamvale Central would help revitalise the centre, which opened in 2007.
“The proposed changes will allow us to enhance the centre and tenancy mix, creating a new and fresh shopping experience that will deliver different kinds of activities alongside shoppers’ everyday needs,” Mr Bridges said.
He said the planned laneway precinct would offer fresh food and dining options which would complement the existing retailers.
Centre manager Deanne Woolcock said the proposed changes would be the “most significant” since the centre opened and thought would be given to offerings which would “embrace the multiculturally diverse mix of the fast-growing community”.
In terms of what the future Calamvale Laneway might look like, Anthony Tai, senior associate at architects Buchan Group said they planned to “bring the outside in”.
This would involve an “internal streetscape” using an industrial palette of brickwork, natural timbers and steel elements.
The Calamvale Laneway project is slated for completion by Christmas.
A retail first spokeswoman said it would ultimately generate more than 100 continuing jobs and 400 jobs during construction.
