Belmont Village Supermarket closes as Woolworths Metro set to move in to shopping precinct

A suburban shopping precinct in Brisbane’s southeast has lost one of its longtime tenants, with a supermarket shutting up shop. But it isn’t expected to remain empty for long.

A supermarket at a suburban shopping precinct in Brisbane’s southeast has closed its doors for the final time after serving locals for more than 15 years.

Belmont Village Supermarket at the Belmont Road Shopping Village had its final day of trading on Sunday, with the precinct believed to be set for some more upgrades in the near future.

The store was formerly known as the Belmont IGA but was rebranded as the Belmont Village Supermarket in March.

A former employee of the supermarket said the closure was a long time coming.

The former employee, who wished to remain unnamed, said the store needed a major upgrade to build on a coffee and juice bar which was added to the store more than a year ago.

“More work should have been done in conjunction with the bar,” the former employee said.

“A relaunch was done but not successful because it wasn’t a full upgrade.”

Quest Newspapers attempted to contact the owner and the Belmont Road Shopping Village for comment.

But the village is set to receive a major boost with a Woolworths Metro to move into the site.

“As our customers increasingly look for convenient shopping locations close to where they live and work, we’ve had the opportunity to enter into a lease agreement for a site at Belmont Shopping Village,” a Woolworths Metro spokesman said.

“The new Woolworths Metro Belmont store will be designed to meet the needs of the Belmont community, with a focus on quality fresh food and health food options at affordable prices.

“We will update the community on a timeline for our new Metro store in the coming months.”

The Belmont Woolworths Metro is not expected to open until late 2023.
