A REGENTS Park motorcyclist has been ordered to perform 120 hours’ community service for a series of offences, including possessing two unlicensed air rifles and driving his motorbike while disqualified from driving by a court order.

Benjamin Peter Drew, 35, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court today to six offences, including unlawful possession of two air rifles (Category A weapons), two breaches of bail conditions, and driving his motorbike unregistered and uninsured.

Police prosecutor Tim Wise told the court that Drew was brought to police’s attention on June 8 last year as he was “driving at speed and weaving in and out of traffic”. He was pulled over on Haldham Cres Regents Park and charged by police. The motorbike was also uninsured and unregistered.

Defence lawyer Andrew McGinness told the court his client had felt cooped up without a licence and needed the “release” of taking his motorbike for a spin around the block.

Then six months later, on January 23 this year, Drew’s neighbours were alarmed to hear the sound of gunshots in their neighbourhood and called the police. They arrived at Drew’s house to find him shooting tin cans on the back fence with an air rifle. Two rifles were confiscated by police. Drew, a married labourer at a motorcycle business in Greenbank, was on probation during all offences and had also entered into a bail undertaking.

Magistrate Michael O’Driscoll said his traffic history was “not good”. He disqualified Drew from driving for an additional two years.
