Student photographer Grace Newlands turns heads with award-winning collection
She has not yet finished school but this Brisbane bayside student has already taken the photography industry by storm, with some of the country’s most respected artists throwing accolades her way.

STUNNING imagery, capturing the essence of teenage identity, have earned Redlands student Grace Newlands a national title.
The Year 11 student has been named the winner of the 2019 Photography Bright Awards hosted by Torrens University Australia for her gallery of photographs that have proven she has a maturity in her work that spans years beyond her age.
Grace said her submission Identity comprised of three moving images designed to eloquently capture a diverse array of students and highlighted how different angles could affect people mentally, physically and emotionally.
She explained that the three leading images reinforced the notion that living in a diverse society leads can lead to a diverse identity.

She was met with encouraging remarks from the Torrens University jury (comprising of senior members of the university’s academic team).
“Your portrait images are beautifully considered and captured,” said one juror.
“Photography is all about understanding, controlling and utilising light and in this series, you have done exactly that whilst exploring the topic of identity, in particular amongst teenagers, a time when so much growth occurs,” another added.
In being named the winner of the prestigious award, Grace was awarded $1000 towards her interest in photography, while Sheldon College received $3000 to continue supporting teaching of the arts.
A spokeswoman for the school said Grace had a passion for all things related to media, which was highlighted when she was named Sheldon College’s Technical Producer of the Year at the College’s 15th annual Arts Academy Awards last year.
