A REDLANDS school student is strutting her way towards a fashion career with the 12-year-old’s designs already turning heads in the industry.
Fashion designer and Sheldon College Year 7 student Tayla McFarlane cleaned up at the Queensland state final of the Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Award.
Three of Tayla’s designs were awarded — her formal dresses received both first and second place in the category, while a dress she entered in the casual category received second place.
She might only be beginning high school but Tayla has already had several years practice doing what she loves.
“When I was seven years old, my mum bought me a sewing machine for Christmas and I started making beach bags and toiletry bags, and toys and cute little stuff like that and people would buy it off me.
When she turned nine, Tayla tried her hand at designing dress patterns.
“Once you’ve done it a few times you get a better understanding,” she said.
Since then she has crafted outfits for herself, and her fashion label 7roses.
“What I do is I look at lots of different design ideas and of diff dresses I pick out my favourite parts.
“Sometimes I can come up with designs in my head and do drawings.
“Most times I buy the fabric before I choose the design, this time (for the competition formal dresses) I chose a silk satin.”
Fashion guru Carly Vidal Wallace said Tayla was “one to watch”.
“I had the pleasure of meeting Tayla and was impressed with her motivation and personal drive to launch her fashion career,” she said.
“She is definitely who I would class as one to watch, and I would expect her to go far.”
Tayla heads to Melbourne for the national final next weekend.
