An application is currently before Redland City Council for a McDonalds restaurant and drive through to be built on the corner of Birkdale Rd and Mary Pleasant Drive.

It would be constructed within the bounds of the shopping precinct and would be joined by a new medical centre.

However 818 people have backed Birkdale resident Cara Harborne, who is calling for the restaurant not to be built.

Ms Harborne took to petitioning platform Change.org and has so far accumulated 818 signatures.

“I am not against development or McDonald’s but what I am against is the impact this development will have on my house and my family,” Ms Harborne said in the petition.

She went on to say she was spurred on to oppose the development because of the effects the business would have on her family home.

She listed bright signage lights, noise from cars at the double lane drive through and increased traffic among her concerns.

“I am objecting to the lights from the signs which will shine through my lounge and bedroom windows 24 hours a day,” she said.

“There are no existing safe spaces for our children to cross at the roads and shops considering there are multiple schools and a daycare centre ... there is significant potential for a negative impact on house prices for locals who live nearby.

“The residents in this area did not buy in an industrial area and should not have to contend with this inclusion directly in front of their houses.”

The calls from Ms Harborne have been joined by those website localaction.com.au which supplied resources for people to lodge a submission against the proposal with Redland City Council.

Submissions to the council closed Monday, January 6.

A spokesman for McDonald’s said the company was “working through the approval process in line with our legislative requirements and don’t want to pre-empt the decision of the council”.
