Developer Lendlease will improve safety in the area of the Serpentine Creek-Scenic Rd intersection by building a four-lane intersection with traffic lights.

The most recent life lost at Serpentine Creek Rd was that of local mother of three Mersina Axiom, who died after an out of control ute ploughed into her mini van.

The road borders the site of $2 billion waterfront residential development Shoreline, which proposes to bring 10,000 new residents to the area.

Lendlease development director Ian Murray said the upgrade was part of the first stage of the development and would see the Serpentine Creek-Scenic Rd intersection provide better access into the development.

He said the first public land release would happen at the end of the month with further land expected to be available later in the year.

“It is estimated that Shoreline will contribute in excess of $40 million to road and transport upgrades in the area,” Mr Murray said.

“Road upgrades are not confined to the Shoreline development site and range from the Cleveland Redland Bay Rd and Double Jump Rd to the north of the development, all the way to Beenleigh Redland Bay Rd and Bryants Rd to the south west.”

Mr Murray said the company had also started major infrastructure upgrades including the intersection of Giles and Cleveland Bay roads.

He said the company would continue to deliver upgrades to improve safety over the life of the Shoreline development.

Mrs Axiom’s sister Rita Elliott, a former police officer who used to live in the Redlands, welcomed the news of an upgrade and said improvements to the road were needed.

“There should definitely be upgrades there,” Ms Elliott said.

“I think the speed could be reduced.”

She also urged motorists to be careful no matter where they were driving.

“As a former police officer I think accidents can happen on any road and driving should be taken seriously on any road.

“Drive for the safety of yourself and others.”

The stretch of road has been the site of several other serious traffic crashes including one which claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman near the intersection of Redland Bay and Serpentine Creek roads in February last year.
