A Somerset man accused of crashing a stolen car into an elderly couple’s Kia Cerato, leaving a 72-year-old man fighting for his life, has faced court.

A Somerset man has appeared in court today after allegedly driving a stolen car into an elderly couple’s vehicle, leaving a 72-year-old man fighting for his life.

Kilcoy man, Allan John McDonald, 44, appeared in court today, October 11, on 11 charges including two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm, two counts of driving unlicensed, stealing possessing drugs utensils, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and breach of bail condition.

The court heard the 44-year-old man was allegedly seen driving a stolen Mitsubishi Challenger on Mt Cotton Rd at Sheldon when the crash unfolded.

Mr McDonald’s car allegedly hit an elderly couples’ Kia Cerato while they were travelling south and on Mt Cotton Rd in Sheldon.

The victims were 72-year-old Geoffrey Colin Kapernick and 70-year-old Catherine Gayle Wright. Mr Kapernick was the driver of the vehicle at the time.

Mr Kapernick was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

Ms Wright was taken in a serious condition to the Princess Alexandra Hospital yesterday.

Mr McDonald sustained minor injuries which were treated at the Princess Alexandra hospital yesterday.

Mr McDonald’s lawyer, Breanna Bowtell, said her client did not want to apply for bail.

“He doesn’t wish to make a bail application at this point,” Ms Bowtell said.

Mr McDonald will appear in Cleveland Magistrates Court on December 8 for committal mention.
