Joshua Peter Robert Haufe, 30, of Redland Bay sentenced for using stolen vehicles

A part-time concreter busted using stolen vehicles twice in three months admitted prison became a revolving door following an ice addiction and dodgy pals, a court has heard.

The surprising history of meth

A 30-year-old serial offender who drove a stolen vehicle and motorcycle in the space of three months attributed an ice addiction and connections with a “wrong crowd” to his “downfall”.

Appearing at Cleveland Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Joshua Peter Robert Haufe pleaded guilty to a string of charges.

They included unlawfully using a vehicle, driving while court disqualified and receiving tainted property.

The court heard Haufe was on January 24 captured on CCTV driving a stolen Volkswagen Golf to a Cornubia service station where he would abandon it when it broke down.

A subsequent investigation revealed it had been stolen on January 21 when a woman drove it off the lot of a car sales business under the pretence of a test-drive.

Fingerprint evidence further connected Haufe to the vehicle, according to police.

The defendant was arrested while riding a stolen motorcycle on March 2 in Capalaba.

A police prosecutor said the motorcycle had been stolen in Woolloongabba.

Haufe had been court disqualified from driving and unregistered and uninsured on both offence dates.

The prosecution noted his offending was aggravated by an eight-page criminal history featuring similar offences, robbery and evading police.

Defence solicitor Jane Bruxner said her client worked on-and-off as a concreter, had spent 76 days in pre-sentence custody and would live with his mother in Redland Bay, should he be released.

Prompted by magistrate Deborah Vasta, Haufe confirmed an ice addiction and “hanging out with the wrong crowd” continually led to his “downfall”.

“Prison has become a revolving door for you,” Ms Vasta said.

“It is time you stepped up to the plate.”

With 76 days pre-sentence custody served, Haufe was sentenced to nine months’ prison and granted a May 18 immediate parole release date.

He was further disqualified from driving for four years with convictions recorded.
