A man who left vehicles standing on rocks after he and a mate stole tyres for their stolen vehicle, dumped the ill-gotten goods in Moreton Bay, a court has heard.

Appearing at Cleveland Magistrates Court on Thursday Reece Mitchell Heinricy, 26, of Eden’s Landing pleaded guilty to unlawfully using a vehicle and three counts stealing among others.

The court heard Heinricy and an accomplice went on a vehicle, tyre and registration plate theft spree in April 2020 in Redland Bay and Victoria Point.

On April 5 – 6, 2020 the defendant was a passenger in a vehicle he watched an accomplice break into and hot-wire at Redland Bay Marina.

Police said the vehicle was found on Masthead Drive in Cleveland on April 15, 2020, noting its handles were damaged during the theft.

On April 29 the thieving duo required tyres for a stolen BMW they were driving.

They left a Holden Commodore standing on a rock in Victoria Point with its rear passenger tyre stolen.

A Toyota RAV 4 was similarly left standing on rocks in Redland Bay when Heinricy assisted in stealing its back “tyres, rims and bolts”.

When none of the stolen tyres fit their pinched BMW the mechanically challenged pair dumped the goods in Moreton Bay, the court heard.

Police noted the defendant co-operated fully once apprehended.

“He pretty much spilt his guts and was open and frank about everything,” a police prosecutor said.

The court heard Heinricy on February 17 was sentenced to a four-year prison head sentence wholly suspended after serving 37 days in pre-sentence custody for related charges and was currently on parole.

Defence solicitor Sarah Pascoe said her client had not committed another offence since his release from custody in August 2020 and had worn an ankle tracking device for two years.

Ms Pascoe further noted Heinricy had strong support from his mother and had suffered early childhood trauma.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta congratulated the defendant on his “wonderful” rehabilitation.

Heinricy was sentenced to 12 months’ prison and granted immediate parole release.

He was further ordered to pay $550 in restitution.
