Deadly stretch of road to have speed reduced

A notorious bayside road, the site of many fatal crashes, will have speeds reduced next month — almost a year after its most recent deadly incident.

SPEEDS along one of the bayside’s most notorious traffic blackspots will soon be reduced.

There have been 148 traffic crashes along Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd in the Redlands from 2014-19 — three of them fatal —and now a decision has been made by the State Government to drop speeds by 10kmh.

The most recent tragedy at the road occurred at the road’s intersection with Serpentine Creek Road less than a year ago.

A motorcyclist also died in a crash along the State Government-controlled road, which runs between Cleveland and Redland Bay through Thornlands and Victoria Point, in 2012.

A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesman said the organisation periodically undertook safety reviews across its road network in consultation with a range of key stakeholders across state and local government.

“A safety review identified Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd as a high risk road and subsequently we commissioned a speed limit review,” the spokesman said.

MILLIONS TO GO TO UPGRADING DEADLY REDLANDS ROAD

“Speed limit reviews take into consideration many factors including road environment, crash history and existing vehicle speeds, when identifying recommendations for changes to speed limits.

“There were 148 road traffic crashes recorded on Cleveland-Redland Bay Road from 2014 to 2019.

“This included three fatalities, 58 hospitalisations, 69 injuries requiring medical treatment and 18 minor injury crashes.”

He said the review recommended speed limit reductions of 10kmh along most of the road.

“The Redlands Speed Management Committee, comprising road safety experts from the Queensland Police Service, Transport and Main Roads and Redlands City Council, endorsed the review’s recommendations in early 2020,” he said.

He said the proposed speed limit changes were planned to come into effect from March 16. Much of Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd currently has a speed limit of 70kmh.

“Speed limit signs will be installed and visible for motorists from this date.

“These new speed limits will mean safer journeys for motorists, bike riders and pedestrians along this busy and growing corridor.”
