The family of a 13-year-old Redlands boy fighting for life after a horrific crash now find themselves praying for a “miracle” after his condition suddenly took a turn for the worse.

Carlo Medina was seriously injured and placed in a coma after being hit by a car while riding his bike near the Redland Bay Marina on Good Friday.

His sister Taylor Medina said Carlo’s condition had been gradually improving over recent weeks and he had been taken out of his coma but remained non-verbal.

However his condition suddenly took a turn for the worst on the weekend when Carlo had to be rushed back to the ICU unable to breath.

She said he had been was struck with pneumonia and both of his lungs had collapsed.

“He’s back on a breathing vent now, things are still touch and go so back to taking it one day at a time,” she said.

Close family friend Kellie Eakin said Carlo’s blood pressure had kept dropping low, his stomach has ceased to work and his throat was so swollen that they suspect there is damage to his vocal cords.

“He really is having everything thrown at him,” she said.

“Please continue to keep Carlo and the family in your prayers. We still need miracles!

“Focused prayers that he regains full consciousness, that his muscles maintain their integrity (as they are atrophying), all bodily swelling and infections go away, his lungs heal without scarring and his blood pressure stabilises are really appreciated.”

“Carlo had a rough night but hopefully picking up now,” she said.

“Unfortunately, we were told he has sustained a permanent brain injury and will be here for months.

“This is an extremely hard time for us all, and ensuring Carlo gets all the love and support and prayers is my main priority at the moment.

“Carlo is the sweetest little soul that has a tough road ahead.”

His older sister Taylor Medina said Carlo sustained a compound fracture to his leg during the crash, along with bleeding to the brain.

His chest had also been crushed, and the pressure from that was causing breathing problems.

“In the ambulance, they said it was bad. He was a category one, so for him to be stable now has been so good — it shows he’s fighting,” she said.

“They don’t know as yet when they’ll be able to wake him up. They still need to do more tests. They have to keep monitoring his brain pressure.

“He’s just got so many different injuries they’ve just been picking up different things in the last couple of days.

“We are all heartbroken and praying he will be OK.”

She said while her whole family was struggling, his twin brother Enrique had been taking the crash particularly hard.

“He’s been stable since his twin saw him on Sunday, so we think that he can hear us.

“Because of Covid-19, the ICU rules are really strict, and only mum and dad have been able to see him, but on Sunday, they actually let Enrique, his twin, go and see him for an hour,” she said.

“Enrique, he was struggling to even go into the house until last night just because they share a bedroom.”

Carlo’s family operates the Big Boss Barber in Wellington Point, which has temporarily had to close down while his parents, Americo and Cindy Medina, stay with him in hospital.

A family friend has set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to help them with expenses as Carlo receives the medical treatment he needs.

A police spokesman said no one had been charged over the incident.
