A 23-year-old man has been jailed for a month for what a magistrate said was the worst hooning she had ever dealt with.

Appearing at Cleveland Magistrates Court on Monday (March 21) Belmont man Michael Francis Newell so disgusted the court a usually measured magistrate Deborah Vasta was spurred to colourful language.

“It is absolutely d***head behaviour,” Ms Vasta said.

“You hit it big time; that is the worst hooning that I have seen and I have seen a lot of it.

“Most people usually do it for a bit of fun at a backstreet, not at such a dangerous location; not for such a long extended period.

“And you may be going, ‘Wow, look at me; I am somehow cool’.

“It makes me sick that that might actually be your response.

“You are 23 for God’s sake; grow up.”

Newell faced a string of charges that included dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving while court disqualified, driving a defective vehicle, stealing, driving while unregistered and driving while uninsured.

The court heard Newell was a “well-known” hoon and a member of two hoon groups, Infamous and Mayhem Cartel, who was on March 17 captured on supporters’ phones doing extensive burnouts on a four-lane arterial road in Redland City.

Shocking video showed to the court depicted Newell burning rubber across an intersection on Finucane Rd near the popular Alexandra Hills Hotel at around 10.35pm.

Driving a silver Ford sedan Newell does circle work while spinning his wheels and emitting vast amounts of smoke, while barely missing road signs and spectators, all the while his passengers hung out of his car.

At the same time another vehicle can be seen doing similar burnouts.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Duncan Blackburn noted the “always” busy intersection is only a few hundred metres from where a beloved bayside couple and their unborn baby were struck and killed by a vehicle last year.

In the footage shown to the court, a large amount of road traffic can be seen backed up while waiting at traffic lights.

Newell also pleaded guilty to doing similar burnouts at a Tilley Rd location described at court as less busy.

His offending was aggravated for occurring while he was SPER suspended from driving.

Newell, the court heard, had also purposely disengaged his vehicle’s rear brakes, used fake number plates and had spray painted it in an attempt to fool authorities.

It came on the back of what Ms Vasta described as an “absolutely appalling” five-page traffic history.

Sen Constable Blackburn said the “extremely serious and dangerous” offending showed an “absolutely blatant disregard for the safety of the community” and warranted actual imprisonment.

Defence solicitor Sarah Churches-Kennedy acknowledged her client’s offending as “extremely serious” and within range of a prison sentence.

“It all comes down to peer pressure,” Ms Churches-Kennedy said.

The court heard a currently unemployed Newell had since “deleted” his hoon group affiliation from his social media and looked forward to becoming a father for a second time, while his partner was pregnant.

It was not enough to keep the hoon from jail.

Newell was sentenced to six months’ jail with immediate parole to be granted after serving one month.

He was further disqualified from driving for 3.5 years.

For stealing two rims in Belmont, the defendant was ordered to pay $380 in restitution.
