Action videos bust Wynnum West man hooning over 12-hour period on Redland City roads

A series of wild hooning videos have led police right to the offending driver, who sold off his high-performance pride and joy.

A 23-year-old motor enthusiast whose daylong hooning and drifting was uncovered by police through videos made of his exploits blamed mates for egging him on.

Lachlan Jack Buhmann, appearing at the Cleveland Magistrates Court on Tuesday, pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle and six counts of wilfully making unnecessary smoke or noise, four of which for a type one vehicle related offence.

A series of raucous videos shown to the court depicted Buhmann as the driver of a Nissan Skyline with seatbelt-free mates, drifting and doing burnouts at numerous locations.

The videos, replete with play-by-play action commentary, shows the group hooning near other road users, while the vehicle’s passengers are merrily flung about.

The court heard Buhmann drove dangerously from around 9am to 9.18pm on July 11 at various Redland City locales including on Valley Way in Mount Cotton, Giles Road and Cleveland Redland Bay Road.

Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Duncan Blackburn said the Wynnum West man admitted to police on September 1 he was the driver featured in the video and had “kept going to impress his mates”.

Already sporting a two-page traffic history, Sen Sgt Blackburn said Buhmann had exposed the community to significant risk which was “totally unacceptable”.

Defence solicitor Rhys Foster said his client, who works in mechanical engineering, was clearly egged on by mates and had since traded his Nissan Skyline for a work vehicle.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta acknowledged the defendant’s lack of criminal history and noted that much of his traffic offending was due to modifications made to his previous vehicle.

However, the magistrate did warn that it would have taken very little for a child pedestrian to be struck while he was on the verge of losing control of his vehicle.

Buhmann was spared a conviction, disqualified from driving for six months and fined $600.

The court was told had he not sold his vehicle it could have been seized by the State Government.
