Woman on prostitution charge threatened with contempt charge after she gave court false address

The woman, who has denied allegations she knowingly participated in the provision of prostitution, threatened with contempt of court.

A woman accused of providing prostitutes has avoided being charged with contempt of court after repeatedly giving a court a false address

The Pine Rivers Magistrates Court had sent Yao-Er Yu letters to a Petrie motel but has been returned to the court as she was not living there.

When Ms Yu appeared Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Wednesday she was asked for an up to date address so she could be sent legal notices.

She repeatedly gave that address as where she lived.

But inquiries by lawyers found the motel had no record of Ms Yu living at the address.

Ms Yu was pleading not guilty to charges of knowingly participating in the provision of prostitutes and possessing tainted property.

When she repeatedly gave the false address to the court Magistrate Melanie Ho said Ms Yu was at risk of being in contempt of court.

“The defendant is misleading the court,” she said.

The court heard Ms Yu is a refugee and had to use an interpreter to communicate with the court.

Ms Yu eventually told her lawyer she was essentially homeless and moved regularly. She was currently living in a room in Slacks Creek.

The hearing will return to court next year.
