A cooking accident is suspected to have caused a fire which tore through an apartment block in Brisbane’s north on Wednesday morning.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said five crews attended Loftus St in Deagon after reports of black smoke coming from the house around 10.15am.
Paramedics arrived a short time later and treated several patients for smoke inhalation.
Patients refused to be transported to hospital.
Two apartments on the right side of the building were completely destroyed, leaving their two elderly inhabitants with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Sandgate Professionals real estate agent Darren Patrick said the women, who both wished to remain anonymous, were seeking alternative accommodation.
“They didn’t even have time to grab their handbags,” he said.|
The fire was brought under control around 10.30am but fire crews remained on scene dampening some areas of the two-storey structure.
Police attended the Deagon address to assist QFES in their investigation into how the blaze began.
Officer Stuart Kerr said the blaze was likely due to a cooking mishap, where a pot had been knocked to the ground.
