Witnesses claim driver ‘tried to run down’ Banyo residents

A neighbourhood disturbance in a northside Brisbane suburb almost took a tragic turn after witness claimed a car was seen jumping the gutter being driven directly towards a group of people.

19 hospitalised in Flinders St attack

The sight of a car allegedly speeding up over a gutter and towards his neighbours gave Banyo resident Ashley George Taylor flashbacks to the Flinders St attack in Melbourne’s CBD in 2017, which killed one man and injured 16 other people.

“My first thought was, ‘Crap!’, I thought it might have been a loony trying to run people down,” Mr Taylor said.

The security canine handler had rushed outside his home on Ludgate St when he allegedly heard screaming and glass smashing at around 6.30pm on Monday.

“I called QPS and as I was on the phone to them I watched a car speed off down the street, then the occupants of (one of the homes) walked out to the street, then the car came back, jumped the gutter, and went right for them,” he said.

“It crashed into the house a couple of times.

“B*****d had his lights off.”

Ashley George Taylor alerted his neighbours when he saw a car speed up onto the gutter and allegedly target pedestrians.

Six police cars arrived on site and a spokesman from the QPS confirmed they spoke to both the occupants of the home and the witnesses.

QPS said no charges were laid because the occupants did not wish to make a formal complaint.

Mr Taylor took to the Banyo and Nudgee Community Safety Interest Group to warn residents of the threat, unsure of whether the driver was targeting his neighbours or randomly acting out.

Another witness, Daniel Ryan, claimed he heard the driver threatening to run people over.

Mr Taylor reported disturbances in the neighbourhood had increased significantly over the previous two weeks, but prior to that it had been a quiet and peaceful area.
