Police feared a crowd of more than 100 pub goers faced injury or death when a drunk driver lost control of his car mid-burnout in front of the Eatons Hill Hotel, the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court heard today.
Four police officers in high visibility uniforms were talking to patrons outside the popular northside venue at 10.45pm on November 20 when they heard the unmistakeable screech of burning rubber.
Less than 20 metres from where they stood, the driver of a white ute was poorly attempting to do a burnout and increasingly appeared to be losing control, the police prosecutor told the court.
As the car jolted forward towards an estimated 100 people gathered outside the pub, the police ran to physically control the vehicle, standing in front of it while it drove at speed.
The driver only narrowly avoided a catastrophe, veering off to avoid the officers, while striking one on the hand with the side of the vehicle as he accelerated away onto South Pine Rd.
The driver then performed a U-turn and the police, once again, ran in front of the car.
“A silly thing to do,” the prosecutor said.
“But they managed to stop the vehicle.”
The driver was identified as 18-year-old Aleeda John Zamorski, who was found to be driving on a disqualified license, with more than twice the legal alcohol limit in his system.
A breath test revealed a blood-alcohol content level of .118.
Zamorski, who had no prior criminal history, was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, driving a motor vehicle while over the middle alcohol limit and driving without a license.
