Upgrade scheduled for notorious northside intersection

Tens of thousands of commuters will benefit from a major upgrade of a northside intersection, known for its high crash rate.

The problematic intersection between Norris Rd and Barbour Rd in Bracken Ridge will soon be upgraded to improve the safety and lighten the congestion for the tens of thousands of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who use it every day.

Three crashes, two of which required hospitalisation, have been recorded at the popular intersection since 2014 and the single lane roundabout is notorious for experiencing bumper to bumper traffic during peak hour and school pick-up and drop-off times.

The Brisbane City Council therefore budgeted for a $12.7 million upgrade, $1.5 million of which has come from the federal government’s Urban Congestion Fund.

An update on the project was delivered to the Infrastructure Committee for the BCC in late November, detailing when and how the road will be improved upon during the $2.08 million Stage 1 of the development.

Construction is slated to begin in March of next year and will include the installation of a new four-way signalised intersection to replace the roundabout, a signalised pedestrian crossing and a 2.5 metre wide shared path along the eastern verge of Norris Rd, near the Bracken Ridge TAFE.

Norris Rd will be widened to four lanes at the Barbour Rd intersection and the bus stops will be upgraded to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Stage 1 is predicted to be completed by late 2021.
