A drunken rampage through Brisbane’s northside ended in a dramatic smash on the Gateway Motorway, a court has heard.

After a car accident: your rights & rules

A man has been imprisoned after an alcohol-fuelled drive across Brisbane’s north caused several car accidents and came to a crashing halt against a guard rail on the Gateway Motorway.

Former St Joseph’s Nudgee College student Jesse John Hines, 31, pleaded guilty to 10 charges, including stealing, public nuisance and dangerous operation of a vehicle, at the Sandgate Magistrates Court.

The court heard that on July 15 Hines took his roommates car for a joy ride, first stopping in at the Puma service station on Sandgate Rd to fuel up.

Jesse John Hines was involved in several damaging crashes during the alcohol-fuelled joy ride that led to his imprisonment.

Police prosecutor sergeant Troy Newman told the court Hines pumped $49.90 worth of petrol into the car and then drove away without making any attempt to pay.

As he got back onto Sandgate Rd, at about 3.15pm, Hines ploughed into the back of white Holden Commodore, causing significant damage.

Rather than stop to provide his particulars, Hines simply changed lanes and wove through traffic to get away from the scene.

The sound and the sight of the mangled front bonnet drew the attention of several witnesses, who later reported the incident to police.

The road rampage continued onto the Gateway Motorway, where Hines accelerated dramatically and lost control of the car, smashing it into a guard rail.

“After crashing and causing extensive damage Hines tried to drive away from the second crash location, but (due to the damage) he was unable to,” Sgt Newman said.

Faced with little other option, Hines ran from the car and jumped over the fence.

Police, who had by now caught up with Hines, managed to follow him over the fence and arrest him.

Hines struggled violently against the officers, reeking of liquor, stiffening his body and making verbal threats.

He was taken to the Prince Charles Hospital in Chermside, where he was “combative and obstructive” to both staff and police who tried to assist him with his injuries.

A blood test revealed he had a blood-alcohol content of .210, more than four times the legal limit.

Defence lawyer Jane Bruxner from KLM Solicitors told the court Hines was using methamphetamines and suffered a severe head injury during the crash, and consequently has no memory of what unfolded.

“He wasn’t in his right mind,” Ms Bruxner said.

Hines has spent six months in custody since his arrest.

He was sentenced to 15 months total imprisonment, ordered to pay $49.90 restitution and will be eligible for parole today.
