Private school fees in north Brisbane have climbed, with one school jumping as high as five percent in a year.
St Rita’s College at Clayfield boosted its tuition costs for high school students from $8190 in 2020 to $8600 in 2021.
Meanwhile, St Joseph’s Nudgee increased its inclusive fees to $16,300 this year for Years 7-12 students, up from $15,740 in 2020 — an increase of 3.56 per cent.
However other schools, including Clayfield College, hardly jumped at all.
The high-profile college increased its tuition fees for Year 1 students 7-12 students from $18,975 in 2020 to $19,165 this year while the $16,375 fees for Year 1 students remained the same.
It was a similar story for St Kieran’s School in Brighton, which jumped by just 0.75 per cent for Year 1-6 students — from $1580 to $1592.
Nationally there was a substantial drop in the rate of fee increase, with the average falling from 2.83 per cent last year to 1.05 per cent in 2021.
Edstart Chief Executive Jack Stevens said the last four years have seen a steady decline in school fee inflation, but the pandemic has accelerated the trend.
“Forty per cent of schools did not increase their fees in 2021, a huge jump from 7 per cent of schools in 2020,” he said.
“A larger number of schools also decreased their fees this year to provide fee relief to families.”
