Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A string of badly-behaved drivers rolled into Sandgate Magistrates Court today, where over $4500 of fines were handed out within a matter of hours.

From a childcare worker who was found driving with drugs in her system, to a father-of-two who strayed from the one drink per hour rule, these are the drivers who were caught doing the wrong thing this week.

Peyton Isabella McKeown pleaded guilty to drink driving after a night out at a cocktail bar in the Valley on August 13. The young woman drew the attention of police when she drove very close to their car on Robinson Rd in Geebung, prompting officers to pull her over and administer a breath test. McKeown blew in at .18, over double the legal limit. The court heard she was regretful and would never do it again. McKeown was fined $1100 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Christopher James Feeney hasn’t had a license since 2014, but that didn’t stop him from stepping behind the wheel of his car on July 31 at Carseldine. Feeney pleaded guilty to driving without a valid license and was chided by Magistrate Jennifer Batts, who told him to get his “head straight”. He was sentenced to 12 months of probation and the conviction was recorded.

Jack Phipps told the Sandgate Magistrate Court it was just “unlucky” that he happened to be picked up by police while driving unlicensed on Zillmere Rd on July 11. Phipps told police he was driving home a car he’d just purchased, despite never having held a driver’s license. The Magistrate told Phipps it was, in fact, lucky for everyone else he had been pulled over, and urged him to take the steps to learn to drive as soon as he was able. Phipps was fined $350 and disqualified from obtaining a driver’s license for one month.
