Mum says man ‘picked’ her family before gross spitting attack

A mother shopping in a north Brisbane suburb has recounted the disgusting moment a stranger walked up and spat at her young child.

Retail casualties of the Coronavirus pandemic

The mother of a three-year-old boy has recounted the revolting moment a stranger walked up behind her young family and spat at her child’s back.

The Ferny Hills mum was shopping at Arana Hills Plaza Tuesday when the disgusting incident happened.

“I was standing at the Bakers Delight at Arana Plaza when an older man, wearing a cobalt blue jumper, missing his four front teeth, came walking towards me with quite a pace just missing my baby who was sitting on my hip,” the mum said.

“He then circled back and stood behind us as if he was waiting to buy something after us.

“As we went to walk off he spat on my three-year-old son’s back.”

The gross incident left the mum worried about her child’s health.

“It’s not just COVID,” she said.

“What if he is a drug user and has AIDS or hepatitis?”

She said she couldn’t work out why they were targeted.

“The way he was storming towards us, I think he had already picked us,” she said.

“In the moment I was shocked, I felt frozen.

“After I was really angry — I was angry at him and angry at myself for not sticking up for my children more.

“I’ve never, ever, had anything else (like this) happen to me before.”

She said a Baker’s Delight worker raced to their aid acting as a “human shield” as the man started to circle them.

“She was amazing,” the woman said,

“He came back and stood a couple of metres in front of us with his arms crossed and an angry look on his face.

“He then started to walk circles around us with a creepy grin on his face then as he walked off he started to laugh.

“I was quite rattled.”

The woman said she had reported the incident to the police and despite needing to go back to the shopping centre she hadn’t.

“I couldn’t bring myself to go back.

“That’s my local shopping centre, that’s where I go each week... I don’t want to feel unsafe.

“Something needs to be done about him.”

And her message for parents — “Just keep your kids close, don’t take your eyes off them.”
