Man breaches domestic violence order against his mother less than a week after he was sentenced

A Gold Coast engineering student, who breached a domestic violent order four times against his mum — including three times in one week, faces a possible prison sentence if he breaches the order again.

Report shows domestic violence surged during COVID-19 lockdowns

Less than a week after he was put on probation for breaching a domestic violence order against his mum, a Gold Coast student was found by police refusing to leave his mother’s house.

The northside man, who lives on the Gold Coast, breached a domestic violence order against his mum five days after a court placed him on probation for the same breaches.

The 25-year-old man, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty to breaching a domestic violence order.

The court heard that his mum had given him permission to stay at her Strathpine home overnight on August 28.

He stayed the night, but later refused to leave, despite repeated request from his distressed mother.

On August 31 police were called to the house and found his distressed mother on the ground floor and the man on the second floor balcony.

The mother told police he had been repeatedly asked to leave after they got into multiple abusive arguments.

Police entered the house and smelled a distinct odour of cannabis; they searched the room where the man was staying where they found a recently used bong.

The court heard this was the fourth time he had breached the same domestic violence order that will run until 2024.

Only days before the man had been sentenced for breaching the same order.

On August 25 on the Gold Coast, where he now lives, he sent abusive messages to his mother and others that made his mum believe he was suicidal.

When police spoke to him about the messages he told them he was just “trying to get a rise out of her”.

Magistrate Melanie Ho said the man, who is studying engineering and project management, risked going to jail as well as his planned career if he did not start adhering to the court order.

The man was ordered to serve 12 months of probation.
