A change of heart allowed an allegedly “obsessed and entitled” ex-boyfriend back onto the streets when Magistrate Sheryl Cornack addressed the case of Harwinder Singh, 26, at Sandgate Court.

Singh was arrested for allegedly stalking and threatening his former partner and appeared via video link from prison to apply for bail, claiming a change of circumstances.

Ms Cornack originally told Mr Singh that he had “no chance of bail because he told police he can’t control himself”.

“If he gets out, then she is (figuratively) imprisoned,” she said.

“There are chilling cases involving men from India who can be very misogynistic towards women.

“A woman was burnt to death in Melbourne last year by an estranged man who thought he could treat women any way he wanted.”

Singh is in Australia on a bridging visa and previously studied business and accounting at QUT.

He allegedly sent the victim threats of poisoning and gunshot wounds.

“I have seen so many problems (in court), and a poor attitude towards women is often the kernel and basis for criminal behaviour,” Ms Cornack said.

The lawyer for the defendant said Singh’s threats were of harm he intended to inflict upon himself, rather than the victim, and claimed Singh had not contacted his ex-girlfriend since June 28 and “ultimately let go”.

“After six weeks of no contact he actually moved onto another relationship, one week before his apprehension,” the lawyer told the court.

“The risk has been ameliorated to an acceptable level.”

After two weeks of imprisonment Singh was released on bail with strict conditions, including a ban on social media, and will appear in court later next month.
