Petition to stop a new 300 home estate north of Brisbane gains 600 signatures overnight

In less than 24 hours more than 600 people have signed a petition against plans to build 300 new homes in a rural suburb north of Brisbane – but council might not be able to stop it.

More than 600 people have signed a petition calling for the local council to put a stop on plans to build a 326 home estate in a rural part of the region.

But as the two development applications are in line with the planning scheme there might not be much Moreton Bay Regional Council can do to stop it.

Residents have had concerns about the future of the rural part of Burpengary since the area was zoned as a part of the Morayfield South emerging community area.

The Burpengary Estate by Cedar Woods Properties is proposed to be built along Hunt Road, at Burpengary.

Two development applications the first at 28-76 Hunt Road and the second for 76-100 Hunt Road were lodged with council in July and August this year.

Combined it creates a 326 home estate.

Despite the development not yet being approved a website created for the new estate says a sales launch and construction is expected to start in the second half of 2021.

Long time residents are calling for council to put a hold on the development until a master plan for the area is done and more infrastructure, such as sewerage and roads are put in place.

So far more than 600 people have signed the petition.

It is not the first time residents have taken on the council in relation to the planning scheme.

The Woody Point Action Group is currently before the Planning and Environment Court fighting plans to build a 40m tall unit block and the Newport Action Group successfully put pressure on council to stop plans for a six-storey unit development at the marina.

Jenny van Holst Pellekaan and her husband Dirk have lived in the for 10 years.

Mrs van Holst Pellekaan said she first become concerned about future plans to develop the area three or four years ago – when the first development applications were lodged.

When she head about the plans for the new estate on Hunt Road she created a Facebook page – Opposing Inappropriate Hunt Road Developments.

“The new council has made it clear it things the planning scheme is pretty flawed and developers are all rushing in before they change it,” she said.

“What we are hearing from council is that this application is code accessible and needs to be considered under the current planning scheme.”

Mrs van Holst Pellekaan said with no sewerage connections, state schools close to capacity, traffic issues growing already and the train station carpark at capacity by 7.30am there was far from enough infrastructure in place to deal with high density living.

“We are moving from semirural to high density living in one hit,” she said.

“One side of the street will be rural and the other will be high density.

“We need appropriate developments in the right place.”

Ms van Holst Pellekaan said she was not surprised by the response to the petition.

“Peoples’ voices have not been heard for a very long time in this area,” she said.

Fellow resident Michele Parsons lives down the road from the proposed development on a three-quarter acre block she bought 20 years ago.

She has been letterbox dropping residents to ensure they are aware of the proposed development.

“There are some people who have only moved in the last few years who are totally unaware and are not happy,” Mrs Parsons said.

“These developments will destroy our lifestyle.

“Why are we expected to put up with extra traffic and pressures on other infrastructure while losing the lifestyle we chose to live in simply because the state and local governments can’t get together and do the right thing.”
