BRISBANE City Council is seeking community input to develop a neighbourhood plan for a growing suburb in Brisbane’s north.

The process for the new Bridgeman Downs Neighbourhood Plan would allow residents to have their say on the future of the area and contribute their ideas on key issues.

The suburb is currently covered by both the Bracken Ridge and District plan and the McDowall-Bridgeman Downs plan, adopted in 2010 and 2008 respectively.

Cr Tracy Davis (McDowall) said she was pleased council had allocated funding to develop a neighbourhood plan specifically for Bridgeman Downs.

“Recently, a number of residents have raised their concerns about development proposals in Bridgeman Downs,” Cr Davis said.

“With growth of the city, this area is facing development pressures.

“It’s been a rural residential area for a really long time. People are interested in understanding where the development is likely to happen in the future and a neighbourhood plan provides an opportunity for the community to provide input into what that looks like.”

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said neighbourhood planning allowed the community to work with council and have a say in how their suburb would evolve.

“This could include suggestions about what needs to be protected, parks and recreational areas or introducing leisure activities that people of all ages can enjoy now and into the future,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Each neighbourhood has its own look and feel, so who better to identify the opportunities than the local residents, business owners and land owners.”

Cr Davis said community input would be vital to ensure the delivery of essential upgrades and the protection of the suburban and rural feel of the area.

“Bridgeman Downs is a great place to live, work and relax and we want to hear from the community about what they want to see in the suburb’s residential and rural areas to enhance the neighbourhood while respecting local character,” she said.

Cr Schrinner said there were a number of ways for the community to get involved.

“You can submit your feedback by completing an online survey, sending an email or dropping a pin on an online map with an idea, and I encourage residents to nominate to be a member of the projects Community Planning Team (CPT),” he said.

A CPT usually includes 20-30 people who live, work, run a business or own a property in the area.

“A CPT provides local knowledge and ideas to help develop the draft strategy and provide feedback to Council,” Cr Davis said.

“CPT meetings include presentations from council officers about the neighbourhood plan and there are also group activities to help members share their ideas with council.”

Nominations for the CPT close on September 29.

The proposed timeline for the neighbourhood plan:

mid-late 2019: Council background research and community input to understand key issues and opportunities in the area.

mid 2020: Council will seek community input on a draft strategy.

late 2020-early 2021: Council will prepare a draft neighbourhood plan which will be reviewed by the State Government and released for further community feedback.

early 2022: adoption of the plan.
