Council has unveiled plans for a new sporting and recreational precinct in Brisbane’s north and is encouraging residents to help shape the green space.

COUNCIL has unveiled plans for a new sporting and recreational precinct at Nudgee Recreation Reserve and is encouraging residents to help shape the green space.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said residents could now share their thoughts on the draft park design, which encompasses almost 13 hectares of green space off Elliott Rd.

“There is a strong need for more sporting facilities in Nudgee and its surrounding suburbs, so we are planning to enhance Nudgee Recreation Reserve with six new touch football fields, two cricket pitches, two soccer fields and a clubhouse,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Residents will also be able to use the green space as a park with a new playground, a picnic shelter with a barbecue, outdoor fitness equipment and a dog off-leash area.”

Cr Adam Allan (Northgate) said Nudgee and surrounding suburbs had experienced a population boom, with more families moving into the area.

He said the Nudgee Recreation Reserve had a long sporting history dating back to the 1940s, with evidence of cricket and football being played on the site more than 70 years ago.

“This project will enable the reserve to once again be used for sports and recreation while also being in a prime, accessible location next to the Nudgee train station,” Cr Allan said.

The reserve currently has a BMX facility, soccer field and seating.

Cr Schrinner said public consultation was open until Sunday, September 22.

There are a number of ways to give feedback on the draft park design before it is finalised later this year:

■ Attend an information session at Banyo train station on Thursday, September 12 from 5-7pm, or Saturday, September 14 from 9-11am.

■ Visit brisbane.qld.gov.au and search ‘Nudgee Recreation Reserve improvement project’.
