St Joseph’s Nudgee College student Ashley Wong smashed a 200m record as a wild storm crashed into tropical Cairns last night.

St Joseph’s Nudgee College student Ashley Wong smashed the 15 years and under 16 200m records last night at the Queensland School Sport Track & Field State Championships in Cairns.

In storm conditions, Wong flew around the bend in 21.76 seconds to obliterate the 1998 Qld Schools 200m record of 21.88 and the 1992 QLD athletics u16 200m record of 21.85.

“It was an incredible result not just because of his time but the conditions under which the record was run,’’ said his father Nathaniel.

“A late storm blew up just before the 200m finals soaking athletes and driving spectators to the back of the stands.’’

His blistering 200m effort followed his first sub-11 second run on Saturday in the 15 years 100m.

It was another record breaking effort by Wong, who entered the championships in record breaking form.

Wong, a junior from the Bracken Ridge Little Athletics Club who now runs for Nudgee College and QUT Athletics, ran a time of 10.84 seconds in the 100m heats, well below the 10.92 second record set by Hugh Donovan in 2009.

It was a Queensland schools 100m record for 15-year-old boys.

“The competition at the championships has been exceptional,’’ Nat said.

Wong is a part of the Queensland Target Talent Program.
