The long-time owner of a popular takeaway shop in Brisbane’s inner-west has turned off the deep fryers after more than two decades.

The owner of Ashgrove Fish N Chips made the shock announcement overnight on Tuesday, July 2, after serving seafood fans for 25 years.

It was believed the business had been on the market for “some time” but the owner was unable to find a buyer.

“It’s time to hang up the apron and retire from the fish n chip shop after 25 years,” the owner posted on their Facebook page.

“I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Ashgrove community for all your support.

“From watching families grow, all the laughter and the amazing friendships that were made.

“I will cherish all the memories. Thank you Ashgrove, we are officially closed”.

Many locals were saddened to hear the news about their go-to takeaway.

“It’s been open for so long and a trusty spot for decent potato scallops. There is a hole in my heart of its disappearing so suddenly,” one person posted.

Another local said the owner told them she could “no longer keep going”.

“She’s been there a long time and has decided she can no longer keep going, which is understandable as she was often there on her own at an age that really wouldn’t make it easy,’’ she posted.

“You would have noticed her adult kid being in there occasionally to help run the shop.’’

Real estate agent Leigh Metzelling from The Off Market Group said despite its prime location, high foot traffic, established reputation and favourable lease conditions with low rent, the business did not receive any interest from buyers.

“It’s getting tougher in the industry to sell hospitality businesses. We just didn’t get any interest on it,” Mr Metzelling said.

“It had the best fish and chips around, for sure”.
