The owner of a Brisbane fish and chip shop has opened up about the tough decision to shut the doors of the popular eatery which had been part of the community for almost 40 years

The owner of Ferny Village Fish and Chips last week announced the restaurant had shut “due to hard times” the business had experienced over the past year.

It is believed the shop had been through several issues recently, including the rising costs of supplies such as frying oil, lettuce and potatoes.

“I would like to thank all my loyal customers for supporting Ferny village fish and chips for the past couple of years,” the owner posted on a local community Facebook group last week.

“Due to hard times we’re no longer able to run the shop anymore. Once again thank you all for your support during these past few years.”

Owner John La, who has been in charge of the restaurant for four years, said he was still shocked the shop has closed.

“Business got slow and I was falling behind,” he said.

“The shop has been there for many years and for me to be the one shutting the doors, I feel gutted.

“That shop is my life, my kids just started school and we made wonderful new friends and just signed a new house lease.

“Now without the shop, I’m lost. I have to find work and might have to move where there’s work opportunities and cheaper house rent.”

The news has saddened many locals, who had been enjoying the restaurant’s food for as long as they have been open.

“Oh that’s so sad. Your calamari was the best around. It’s been our local for 37 years. We tried others but were never happy. Sorry to see you go,” one person wrote on Facebook.

“You made the best fish burger in town boss, battered fish, crunchy lettuce, extra tartar sauce, half cooked egg and chips with chicken salt. This was my order I would always get. As soon as I walked in you already knew what I was ordering before asking … I hope and pray good things come your way boss,” another customer commented.

While others commented about seeing another small business close.

“As a fellow small business owner, our hearts are heavy to hear this. It’s such hard times for everyone and particularly small business. Best wishes for your future endeavours,” another business owner commented.

“Really sad to hear of a small business closing up,” another local resident wrote.
