The career of Albany Creek superfish Samuel Short continued to steam forward when he snared his second gold medal of the Australian Swimming Age Championships last night in Adelaide.

The career of Albany Creek superfish Samuel Short continued to steam forward when he snared his second gold medal of the Australian Swimming Age Championships last night in Adelaide.

Short won the 15 years 400m freestyle in 3:56.05 after shaving an amazing 14 seconds off his previous personal best in the 1500m on the opening night of competition.

On Tuesday evening he also won a silver medal in the 200m butterfly.

The Prince of Peace School student still has the 800m and 200m freestyle events to come.

Short is quietly spoke and polite, yet ruthlessly minded when he comes to achieving in swimming as he sets new standards.

At the senior metropolitan meet late last year Short lowered Grant Hackett’s age record and went faster than Kieran Perkins’ Brisbane age record.

Last year he also beat an age group record held by Mack Horton.

“His trajectory is looking good,’’ said his mother Nicole.

Short’s coach at Albany Creek, Richard Sleight, said he was a “very talented young man’’ but critically also had a work ethic to match his ability.

Short is a real water baby.

The past student of St Williams Catholic School in Grovely was also an elite life saver who was part of the youth team which won the world life saving championships for Maroochydore late last year.

Then representing Maroochydore in the national 200m obstacle course, Short won and was only seconds off claiming a world record.

The course involves competitors swimming around and under a submerged net out to sea.

Success also continued for the Newmarket Racers Club, with Elizabeth Dekkers winning the girls 14 year 200m butterfly.

Logging a time of 2:11.37, The All Hallows School student was only six one hundredths of a second behind the Australian Age and All Comers record set by Dolphin and former Wilston State School student Madeline Groves in 2009.

It was Dekkers second medal of the meet after she snared bronze in the 100m butterfly.

Dekkers’ medal last night continued success for the Miller family run Racers.

On Tuesday Newmarket Racers’ Georgia Powell (All Hallows School) had tough competition from Kawana Waters’ Georgia Pendergast in the girls 16 year 100m breaststroke, but Powell prevailed to win.

Another two Newmarket Racers, Kate Able (silver, 13-year 100m butterfly) and Josephine Crimmins (bronze, 13-year 100m butterfly), snared minor medals.
