A DRUNK woman who drove off after crashing her four-wheel-drive has copped heavy fines.

Sandra Christina Trow, 46, pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of liquor and failing to comply with duties of a driver involved in a crash, when she appeared at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on October 21.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Graham Turner said Trow crashed her Toyota LandCruiser on Brittainy St in Petrie on August 25, damaging trees, a roof-rack and leaving “wreckage” strewn across the road.

The court heard a witness to the crash followed Trow to her home when she failed to stop after the collision, and alerted authorities.

Trow told attending police that she had drunk four bottles of wine. Tests would later confirm she had a breath alcohol limit of 0.207 - four times the legal limit.

Trow’s defence solicitor Brendan Beavon said his client had a “fairly unblemished” traffic history which did not include drink driving.

Mr Beavon presented the court with numerous character references describing Trow as a caring and compassionate person, who worked full-time for a non-profit organisation in the disability sector.

Trow, who was said to be deeply remorseful and embarrassed by the incident, booked herself into a rehabilitation unit and attended Alcoholics Anonymous “four times a week”.

Magistrate John Smith said Trow’s behaviour placed others in danger and was compounded by drinking while driving.

Mr Smith acknowledged Trow’s strong response to seeking treatment and said her drink-driving was in contrast to the person described by her colleagues’ glowing character references.

Trow was fined $2100 and disqualified from driving for 18 months with convictions recorded.
