A Moreton Bay nurse has recalled the horrific moment she witnessed her dog heinously mauled in front of her home.
Debbie Wolthuis, was at her home in Kallangur on May 12, when the chaos unfolded.
“I walked out the front with rubbish in my hand and my dog Mary took the opportunity to run past me,” Ms Wolthuis said.
“I called her, I walked around the hedge and I have seen the other dog come running down the street and grab hold of Mary — she was screaming.”
Ms Wolthuis fought for her 10-year-old greyhound Mary as the dog was attacked in front of Ms Wolthuis’ property on the nature strip.
“I threw my bin at the dog,” she said.
“That is when the owner came down the street called his dog and left.”
Ms Wolthuis posted on Facebook, searching for information on the other dog involved in the attack.
“I can't get the vision out of my mind and the scream will haunt me forever,” she posted.
Ms Wolthuis said the incident had rocked her and she was frighted to leave her house.
“The PTSD from this is huge,” she said.
“I am crying and I don't want to go out.”
Mary suffered an extensive amount of injuries and was taken to a nearby emergency vet where Ms Wolthuis had to pay $4000 for treatment.
“She suffered puncture wounds to the back and so much bruising,” she said.
“When I visited her Monday she was shaking and traumatised.
“She wasn't eating.
“I am angry because I am a single woman working bloody hard as a nurse at Chermside and to have to fork out $4000 at the moment is huge.
“I have no idea how I am going to replace that money.”
She said dog attacks, especially in the Kallangur area were getting out of hand.
“Dog attacks are a big issue in the Kallangur and surrounding suburbs.
“I was talking to a few people in the Kallangur area and it is a regular occurrence
“Just because you think your animal is friendly doesn't mean it is friendly with everyone elsewhere.”
“It doesn't matter if you have your dog on the lead or not.
“It is still at risk of being attacked.
“I won't go into dog parks because people don’t look after their dogs.”
Ms Wolthuis has reported the incident to the Moreton Bay Regional Council.
