Man dies after crashing into power pole in Thornlands

Witnesses have recalled the horror of a crash south of Brisbane overnight that left one man dead and more than 1000 residents without power.

Witnesses have recalled the horror scenes at the site of a firey crash which claimed the life of a man in Thornlands overnight.

Emergency services were called to Cleveland Redland Bay Rd near White Fig Place around 10.40pm Monday, May 15, after a blue Holden Commodore crashed into a power pole, causing it to ignite.

The Thornlands man in his 30s was the sole occupant of the vehicle and died at the scene.

About 1000 homes were left without power for several hours as a result of the crash.

Thornlands residents said they could hear the crash from streets away.

“It was such a loud bang,” Thornlands resident, Kristy Baxter, commented on Facebook.

“I could smell fire,” another user wrote.

“I could see the smoke from my window, it’s an absolute mess,” Lisa Farrington wrote.

Multiple residents said the scene of the crash was confronting.

“It didn’t hit a pole, it wrapped itself like tin foil,” Joe Launiuvao commented on Facebook.

Another user, Kurtis Bolt, said the car appeared to be completely destroyed.

“It was crazy, I went and had a look at the car wrapped around the pole and the engine was sitting 20 metres up the road,” he said.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident.

Police are appealing for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident or the vehicle in the Redlands area prior to the crash, to come forward.
