Police will launch an internal investigation after an undie-clad man allegedly ploughed a stolen police car into a tree while on a Maccas joy ride north of Brisbane Tuesday morning.
The man allegedly stole the car after police arrived at Boundary Rd, Narangba about 3.21am responding to reports he was armed with a knife.
A 37-year-old Moreton Bay man has been charged over the incident.
It is alleged an altercation between the man and police ensued before he sprinted from police and drove off in a police van with its lights still activated.
Police also pulled out a firearm during the confrontation.
The man allegedly crashed the car while on route to McDonald’s along Anzac Ave at Mango Hill — some seven kilometres away from the initial confrontation.
In a media address on Tuesday Inspector Joseph Zitny said police were aware there may also have been a woman with him.
“Police responded to a call in relation to an armed male person,” he said.
“An altercation then took place between police and this person.
“Subsequent to the altercation this person left the scene driving a police motor vehicle.”
Police allegedly took about 20 minutes to catch up to the man.
It is alleged he then fled on foot, but was chased by officers before being tasered and arrested.
Inspector Zitny said a number of police responded to the original report.
He would not comment on how the 37-year-old man allegedly managed to steal a police van or whether the keys were left in the ignition, but said an “internal investigation” was underway.
It is alleged that after the crash the man fled on foot, but was chased by officers before being arrested.
Witnesses said the man was wearing only his underwear.
He was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
He has since been discharged and was on Tuesday night charged with two counts of obstruct police (public place adversely affected) and one count each of going armed so as to cause fear, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, dangerous operation of a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and wilful damage of police property.
He was denied bail and was expected to appear before Pine Rivers Magistrates Court Wednesday, October 4.
No police officers were harmed.
