Young drug-addicted thief chased by dogs through Brisbane backyards

A court has heard how this Tingalpa man bungled a “serious and significant” burglary at a suburban Brisbane home, leaving a vital piece of evidence in a stolen car.

Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

A young Brisbane meth-addict was chased through several backyards by the K9 dog squad during a failed attempt at a burglary last week, a court has heard.

Zak Quinn Patricklee Reedy, 20, appeared from the watch house on Monday to plead guilty to five charges at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court.

Reedy, who resides in Tingalpa, stood accused of attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle, entering a dwelling to commit an indictable offence and trespassing.

Police prosecutor sergeant Graham Turner told the court it was around 5.30pm on March 11 when Reedy jumped the fence of a suburban home in Bray Park.

Reedy unlocked the security screen door to gain entry to the house and, once inside, took a key ring with a house key and a remote control fob, used to open the security gate.

He then moved to the garage where he tried to start the car using the wrong key, attracting the attention of the car’s owner, who jumped into the passenger’s side in an attempt to stop the theft.

Reedy fled the scene on foot.

Police officers attended with the dog squad, who discovered Reedy hiding in a nearby in a neighbour’s backyard.

The young man was arrested and taken to the watch-house, where further investigation revealed the attempted theft was the second he’d been involved in that month.

The court heard a Mitsubishi Triton was stolen from a home at Morningside on March 4 and later discovered during a routine patrol at Bray Park, where it was parked and fitted with stolen registration plates.

Reedy had left his TAFE photo identification card in the foot well of the drivers side, indicating he’d unlawfully used the car.

This allegation was further supported by a witness account, who told police they’d seen Reedy exiting the vehicle.

Defence lawyer Shaun Kolo of KLM Solicitors told the court Reedy became addicted to dangerous drugs at the age of 15 and, by 19, had started abusing methamphetamines and prescription painkillers.

Reedy quit “cold turkey” for several months, during which time he managed to hold a full-time job as a chicken catcher at Ingham’s, but relapsed when he learned his father was terminally ill with cancer.

Magistrate Trevor Morgan categorised the offending as a significant and serious example of burglary, noting a sentence of imprisonment was “inevitable”.

Reedy was sentenced to nine months imprisonment with immediate parole eligibility.

Convictions were recorded.
