A heartbroken Redcliffe man has spoken out about the horrific moment his wife and toddler saw their beloved dog killed by a speeding driver who narrowly missed their child’s pram.

The man’s wife and their child were on their driveway at Donald St in Woody Point on September 30, waiting for a friend to go for a walk.

“My wife was going out the front with our baby,” Mr Dinneen said.

“She’s had one dog on the lead and our other (called Maddie) ran off before she could get her on the lead.”

Maddie ran across the road to greet the family’s friend, oblivious to a car coming around the corner.

“My wife’s seen the car come really fast and her friend’s waved (at) him to slow down, but he just came barrelling down,” he said.

“They didn’t even attempt to break before driving off.

“You can even hear the bang when they hit her.”

Neighbours rushed to help the family but it was too late.

“The neighbours heard the bang and came out,” he said.

“Maddie just laid there for a while and she bled out.

“The car had just clipped her but it was going so fast there was just no chance.

“It was horrifying for my wife to watch.”

Mr Dinneen said speeding in an ongoing issue in their street and needed to be fixed.

“He’s (the driver who hit Maddie)probably doing 70km/h at least, it’s a 40km/h zone,” he said.

“There’s no signage on our street to show people it’s a 40km/h zone.

“Even last night, there’s still cars going so fast down our street.

“There’s a few neighbours that are coming together to get a speed bump put on the street.”

He said they wanted to show people that their beloved pet died for a reason, and to prevent such incidents from happening again.

“We want to show people that she didn’t die for nothing,” he said.

“We’ve written to council, and my neighbour has written to council.

“There needs to be action taken.”

He said it could have been a child that was hit.

“The car was so close to the pram, it could’ve been a lot worse,” he said.

“We are thinking about our (daughter) and how to keep her safe.”

Mr Dinneen adopted Maddie as a present for his wife six-and-a-half years ago.

“Dogs are more than a pet,” he said.

“They’re man’s best friend.”

He said he wished the driver would have stopped and helped, rather than driving off.

“It’s the driving off that’s hard for me,” he said.

“If that person would've stopped and said they did the wrong thing and helped my wife clean up the road it would’ve been different.

“Accidents do happen, we would’ve been upset yeah, but we’d still be OK with them.

“All I keep asking is why didn’t you stop and help and do the right thing.”

CCTV footage from the house captured the moment Maddie was struck but the registration plates were not recognisable.

The video also plays the blood-curdling screams from Mr Dinneen’s wife as she realised her pet had been struck.

“Four or five houses have shown the car speeding down the street but none of the cameras are good enough to get the rego,” he said.

“(CCTV from) The police could tell from my video footage that the car was speeding, but they couldn’t do anything without proof.”

Mr Dinneen said they were still asking anyone with information about the driver to come forward.
