Potentially lifesaving care for Moreton Bay cancer patients could be made that much easier if a proposed cancer care centre gets the tick of approval.
Norfolk Estates Pty Ltd and Central Lakes Shopping Centre Pty Ltd have lodged a development application to construct a cancer care centre and reconfigure one lot into two lots at 1-21 Pettigrew Street, Caboolture and part of 120-124 McKean Street, Caboolture.
The centre would be located on a vacant corner block of the Central Lakes Shopping Centre, across the road from the Caboolture Hospital.
The application reads that the Caboolture Cancer Care Centre would offer comprehensive care including medical oncology (chemotherapy), radium, onsite CT, onsite compounding pharmacy (exclusively for cancer patients using the facility) and clinical trials.
The proposed reconfiguring a lot component of the development involves subdividing the proposed health care service from the balance of the subject site improved by the existing Central Lakes Shopping Centre.
The ground floor would contain radiation oncology, medical oncology, oncology consulting, allied health, reception and administration.
A plant has been allocated for level one (mezzanine).
A cancer care operational brief provided in the application, reads there will be four consulting rooms used for medical advice/consultation and one interview room which will be used for financial consent and private discussions, not medical advice/consultation.
“There will only ever be one doctor consulting on any given day,” the brief read.
“Clinic consultation times will be for a four hours maximum block as clinical full time equivalent is split between sites.
“The proposal does not represent a conventional medical centre/consulting room set up in that it provides a bunker which is to provide radiation treatment, a CT space for imaging and chairs for medical oncology treatment.”
The operation hours of the centre would be Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12pm emergency service.
There would be a drop-off and pick-up service offered by Cancer Care Associates for patients who cannot manage their own way to the centre.
“Extended hours may also be required on occasion to ensure continuity of patient care, in the event of a delay due to equipment breakdown.
“Linear accelerators are complex equipment and occasionally breakdown.
“Again, the instances of extended hours are rare, but the capacity needs to be available to meet the needs of a complex and high technology cancer treatment platform.”
10 patients would be the expected maximum number of patients at the centre at any one time, to be serviced by 14 full-time staff.
It is anticipated that the facility will service four patient movements per hour.
The proposed development would maintain an existing signalised pedestrian link from the adjacent Caboolture Hospital, as well as the existing pedestrian footpath provided along the McKean Street and Pettigrew Street frontage.
The development would also provide an additional pedestrian link through the proposed Health Care Service lot to the existing Central Lakes Shopping Centre.
