The family of a young man killed in a tragic crash north of Brisbane have described their heartbreak as they pay tribute to the son and brother they called “our big gentleman giant”.

Gympie resident Nathan Maher was a passenger in a Ford driven by his older sister, Kayla, when a Toyota 4WD collided with the car at the intersection of Deception By Rd and Webster Rd at Deception Bay after 9pm on December 3.

The 24-year-old was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with critical injuries but later died.

His sister and her three children, who were in the car, were taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Mr Maher was the youngest of six siblings, son to Janice and Roger, and grew up in Gympie where he attended Gympie Special School.

Kayla said her younger brother was the most amazing person you would ever come across.

“Nathan was an absolute pleasure to be around and he touched every person’s heart that he came across,” she said.

“He was a massive teddy bear as we called him our big gentleman giant.

“My family is devastated and we have no words to describe our heartbreak.

“Nathan loved motorbikes, loud music and cars.”

There were also emotional tributes posted across social media after the accident with one person posting memories of knowing Mr Maher since they were children until they became adults.

“May you RIP Nathan, you were a sweetheart taken to soon,” friend Storm Reed posted on Facebook.

“I’ll never forget the kind soul you had and the ‘I wasn’t ever allowed a boyfriend because I was yours’.

“My heart goes out to your family, Janice, Sonya Maher, Kayla, Daniel Maher, Roger.

“From pretty much running around in nappies together, to becoming adults together.”

The driver of the Toyota, a 34-year-old Scarborough man, suffered minor injuries.

The Forensic Crash Unit is still investigating the crash.
