Moreton’s best school sports stars revealed

The best school sporting stars north of Brisbane have been revealed. We have highlighted Pine Rivers, North Lakes and Caboolture’s best aspiring athletes in 2020. See who made the list.

THE next big thing in soccer, softball, futsal and even freestyle scooter riding could very well come from these Moreton Bay suburbs.

Quest Community News asked Pine Rivers, North Lakes and Caboolture high schools to name their brightest sports stars and here they are, prepare to be impressed by their achievements — and they haven’t even finished school yet!

The Year 8 student is an outstanding softballer who rose to make the under 14 boys Australian Softball Team. “The ultimate goal is to play for the Open Men’s Australian Team,’’ he said.

“ At the moment though I am happy to just keep playing and making the State and National teams for my age.’’

The Year 11 Race Walking (5000m) champ has represented blitzed the competition in both Queensland and Australia, coming second at the Queensland Athletics Championships and finishing in the top 10 at the Australian All Schools Championships in Perth in the 5km race-walk. She said race walking was the best sport she had competed in. “It’s technique based and it can be very challenging both mentally and physically. Through the years I have travelled many hours to go to competitions with the same nerves and excitement as when I first started. I love race walking and it pushes me to be my best.” She said her goals varied from coaching or “even continuing in the sport and hopefully compete at the highest level. For now though, my goal is to help young children to find a passion in race walking and to lift the profile of race walking.”

CAYSE MUNRO

The 15-year-old is a freestyle scootering whiz who has twice been named Australasian Freestyle Scooter Champion in 2018 and 2019. Already with an array of sponsors on board such as Apex Pro Scooters, Scooter Crew, Mislead Clothing and Game Protection, Munro said he loved the challenging nature of the sport while also meeting people. His aim was to attend the world titles in London in 2021.

The year 12 students at Caboolture SHS is an offensive line player in gridiron who made the under 19 Queensland Sundevils state side. “I like the competitiveness of the sport and the physicality. You need to be mentally strong and be prepared to whack and get whacked,’’ he said Kembrey said he aimed to compete “at a high level and see where the sport takes me’’.

THE LAKES COLLEGE

TYLER DAWE

Dawe is a Year 10 rugby union player and athlete who represents the North Lakes Leopards and Deception Bay Little Athletics. Dawe’s dedication can be seen in the training schedule where Dawe spends four hours a week training for rugby and three hours a week for athletics. Dawe, also a Brisbane city rep rugby team, aspired to play for the national team.

COLE AMOS-TOOMEY

Amos-Toomey is an outstanding futsal and football player who made the Queensland South-East under 19 side. A supporter of the famous Liverpool FC club, Cole spends up to 15 hours a week refining skills of the game. “What I love most about competing, regardless of the sport, is making the people that support me along the journey proud. That’s what pushes me to drive harder and further than the rest,’’ Amos-Toomey said. Amos-Toomey’s best achievement so far was being selected to represent the country in 2018 to tour Italy (under 16) and being selected to represent Australia (2020) in a World Cup under 19 tournament. Amos-Toomey’s ultimate sporting goal was “to compete as much as possible, knowing that I worked harder than everyone around me to be in this position’’.

LUCY ANTONELLI

Antonelli, a year: 7, was a basketball and athletics ace who plays hoops for the Spartans club in Brisbane. Antonelli, a supporter of the Golden State Warriors, Brisbane Bullets and the two senior national teams, said making it to state titles in athletics last year and to the state titles in basketball on three occasions were career highlights. Antonelli’s goal was to make the Australian basketball team and become an WNBA player when she was older.

MATTHEW JOUBERT

A soccer and futsal player from the Peninsula Power Soccer Club and North Coast Kings Futsal clubs respectively, Jourbert spends six hours a week working on his game. A support of Manchester City, Joubert said playing with his friends was the most enjoyable part of the sports. Joubert, who has toured Malaysia, China and Barcelona with national sides, said his ultimate sporting goal was to “become a professional football or futsal player’’.

MITCHELL SUTHERLAND

The year: 11 The Lake College student and Redcliffe Padres baseballer loved hitting home runs and making difficult plays in the field. A state championship representative and New York Yankees supporter, Sutherland said he wanted to become a pro ball player.

ST PETERS CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

JASMIN NEWELL

The 2020 Regional Little Athletics Championships competitor is a real all-rounder having landed first place in Shotput, second in Javelin and third in discus, qualifying her for a spot at the Queensland state titles. She said she loved her sport because it gave her the “opportunity to travel and compete, and push myself to do the best I can while having fun”. “My sport is difficult to perfect and I look at it as a challenge and motivation. Discus is also fun to train for and experiment with the techniques.” Jasmin has her sights set on only one accomplishment: “I want to represent not only my school but my athletics club going through to nationals. I want to compete at nationals and experience the nerves and opportunity while representing both of my teams.”

KYLE HARVEY

The Caboolture student landed a place in the NSW State Titles in 2019, for the King of MX NSW Champion on a 50cc bike. He then went on to place third at the Australian Junior MX Championships. This thrill-seeker especially loves one thing about his sport — the throttle.

“It feels good to go fast around corners. I love doing jumps and getting to learn new things.

I want to get better and better and be a pro when I’m older.”

KYARNEE YOUNG

Young was a rising BMX exponent who, last year, was fifth in the 10 years girls Australian BMX Championships and selected third in Australian Mighty 11s to compete against New Zealand earlier in the year. “I get to travel around everywhere (Shepparton and Bathurst) and make new friends,’’ she said. Young’s hero was Sam Willoughby and she wanted to represent Australia at the Olympics in BMX.

BROCK BROWN

Brown qualified in four events representing Sun Coast Region in 2020 State Swimming Championships. An early riser, Brown said he loved making friends from other schools while competing. “I love trying to beat my best time of 37 seconds in 50m butterfly,’’ said Brown, who won a gold medal at Redcliffe Swim Championships.

The Queensland under-12 Schoolboys Football representative 2018 Sydney Silver Medallist returned for the bronze in 2019 in Canberra. He has also been selected for a dream place in the Brisbane Roar under-13 Academy 2020. He said he loved the game because of its competition. “And because it gives me a thrill of energy and excitement when on the pitch. It is also good exercise and I have fun with my friends. My goals in football are to play professionally in Europe and to play international football.”
