Lawyer of Aaron Huckel says illegal photo was snapped during alleged murderer‘s last court date

An illegal photo has allegedly surfaced after it was taken from inside a southeast Queensland courtroom on the same day accused murderer Aaron Huckel faced court.

The lawyer representing a man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend late last year has told a magistrate his photo was illegally taken while inside a courthouse last time the matter was heard.

Brendan Whelan, a legal aid lawyer representing Aaron Daniel Mitchelson Huckel — who is accused of killing his former girlfriend Emily Thompson — told Magistrate Annette Hennessy a photo of himself standing at the bar table at Pine Rivers Magistrates Court was taken on the last occasion Mr Huckel’s case was mentioned. He said it appeared on social media joined by the caption ‘killer’s lawyer’.

Mr Whelan said he had spoken to police prosecutors in regards to the photo taken from inside the court, which is illegal in Queensland.

Aaron Daniel Mitchelson Huckel, 19, of Kallangur, was not present when his matter was mentioned at Pine Rivers Magistrates Court Monday, January 9.

Mr Huckel is charged with the murder of his former girlfriend, 18-year-old Emily Nicole Thompson.

Mr Whelan, appearing as agent for legal aid, informed told the court the brief of evidence was “rather complex” and that it was therefore still outstanding, however police prosecutor Bimal Raut expressed confusion saying he had the brief of evidence with him and that it was, in fact, now available.

Ms Hennessy said the matter would be adjourned until February 6 for committal mention to allow some time to go over the brief.

Mr Huckel is charged with murder and misconduct with a corpse after Ms Thompson was reported missing by her parents after she failed to return home on October 22 last year.
