Labor reveal plans for new $11.5 million PCYC at Caboolture which will be jointly funded

A major party is willing to chip in $4 million towards a new multimillion-dollar PCYC in Caboolture – but the project all depends on another level of government chipping in.

How did the Coalition win the unwinnable election?

The Labor Party will contribute $4 million towards a new PCYC at Caboolture if it wins the election on October 31 – but the project’s success will depend on Federal funding.

Plans to build the $11.5 million facility on King St, next to the new police station, were first put forward by the Federal Labor candidate for Longman during the 2019 election campaign.

Candidate Susan Lamb said Federal Labor would commit $3.5 million to the facility if elected.

Moreton Bay Regional Council said it would add $2.5 million towards the project.

But Ms Lamb and the Labor Party did not win power last year.

Current State Labor MP for Morayfield and Police Minister Mark Ryan has revitalised the promise, just weeks out for the State Election.

He announced on Friday that if elected the State Government would make the land available and chip in $4 million.

“Having a PCYC in the heart of Caboolture will be a tremendous benefit for our community,” Mr Ryan said.

“It will mean local young people can have better opportunities in life, get connected with their

community, and go on to be positive contributors to our society.

“Building this new facility will also create good local construction jobs, which is a key part of the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s Economic Recovery Plan.”

The current Caboolture PCYC opened in Toovey St in 1982.

A council review identified it was in desperate need of an upgrade.

In the past five years membership number have grown to 1259 – they are predicted to reach 2200 by 2028.

Mr Ryan said the current PCYC would continue to operate as a community asset if a new one were to be built.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery confirmed council would still contribute the promised $2.5 million towards the project.

Despite these commitments the project needs extra funds and the council is calling on the Federal Government to come to the party.

There was no money set aside in last week’s Federal Budget for the project but Federal LNP MP for Longman Terry Young said he was lobbying to secure the funding.

“Mark Ryan and Moreton Bay Regional Council have been working on securing this project for almost two years,” Mr Young said.

“It’s no surprise that just weeks out from a State Government election, Mark has announced Labor’s funding commitment.

“I have been fighting to secure Federal funding for this project, and will continue to do so.”
