A Sunshine Coast man has been refused bail after allegedly “showing callous disregard” and fleeing the scene of an horrific double fatality.

Kaylin Benjamin Page, of Palmwoods, didn’t appear in the Caboolture Magistrates Court after Operation Tango Fallout was launched to investigate the crash.

Police will allege Caboolture South men Jared Hoggan, 30, and Simon Fergestad, 32, were riding a moped when they were struck from behind by a dark-coloured vehicle.

The duo were travelling east on Caboolture River Rd, Morayfield, about 9.10pm on Friday night when they were allegedly hit by a vehicle driven by Mr Page.

The moped was then knocked into a stationary 4WD that was sitting on Kenneth St, waiting to turn into Caboolture River Rd.

Mr Fergestad, who was the pillion passenger on a Yamaha CY50, died at the scene despite valiant efforts by bystanders and first

Mr Hoggan died later in hospital after suffering critical injuries.

The 38-year-old is now facing four charges including two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and left scene without obtaining help.

Andrew Hanlon of Potts Lawyers appeared on Mr Page’s behalf as the Palmwoods man made a bid for bail.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Shannon Fox opposed the bail application.

“By his own admissions, Mr Page has said when he drinks heavily he does black out, this is extremely concerning given his history of drink and drug driving,” she said.

“In my submission that risk cannot be mitigated.

“He did flee the scene, he provided no assistance to the deceased victims, his manner of driving involved driving on the wrong side of the road in order to avoid traffic.

“Further, he did not hand himself into police, police had to go and find him after conducting investigations.

“Ultimately, I would submit that he is at risk of committing further offences.”

Mr Page’s lawyer disagreed offering several mitigation strategies including submitting to breath testing and a ban on driving and consuming alcohol.

The court heard Mr Page has lived on the Sunshine Coast all his life, currently residing with his mother at Palmwoods.

Magistrate Jim Blanch said he considered all the matters but refused the application for bail.

“He seems to have a disregard for orders of the court, his driving history is terrible,” he said.

“The alleged offences are very serious, it’s alleged that he shower a callous disregard for persons that were injured, fled the scene, he did not hand himself in.

“Bail is refused.”

His case will be heard again on December 6 in the Caboolture Magistrates Court.

Mr Page’s appearance comes as tributes and well-wishes continue to flow for the beloved Caboolture South duo.

Mr Hoggan’s sister Charlotte wrote: “R. I. P Jared my beautiful brother I love you loads and loads cya (sic) when I get there.”

Geoff Bolton said “R. I. P my brother Jared ur no longer in pain bro. Jarrad and Simmo fly high brothers you’s both will be dearly missed love u (sic) both.”
