HerStory: What goes on behind closed doors

A hard smack to a young child at a Kallangur shopping centre spiralled out of control when a stepfather with split personality disorder turned violent towards his partner, her car, and her home.

The shocking case of domestic violence was heard at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on January 7, when a 27-year-old Brisbane man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to two counts of contravening conditions of a domestic violence protection order.

The court heard the couple were at the Lillybrook Shopping Centre on November 23 when the man “disciplined” the woman’s child with a smack, sparking an argument between the two.

According to the police prosecutor, the couple left the centre soon after in the woman’s car and midway through the drive home the man abruptly locked the brakes, put the car in park and walked away, down the street.

The woman took control of the vehicle and returned to her home with her child.

She locked all of the windows and doors behind her.

By 6pm, she began to hear banging on her windows and doors as the man returned, screaming at her.

While the woman was sitting on the toilet, the man pummelled the window beside her, causing it to smash and send shards of glass flying across her body.

The prosecutor told the court the woman briefly opened the glass sliding door to tell the man to leave and warn him she would call the police, all the while keeping the security screen securely shut.

The court heard the man then spat on the woman’s nose and eyes, threw a screwdriver and an ashtray at her, and further verbally abused her.

Police arrested the man who said he had “trouble controlling his anger” and “exploded”.

The abuse didn’t end there, however.

The pair reconciled and a little over a month later, on December 27, police were once again called to their home.

The court heard the man was wandering out the front yard of the house when the police arrived, and told them he had been sleeping when his partner questioned him about a female friend of his.

The man became enraged, punched the woman in the back and threatened to stab her.

The man’s lawyer told the court he suffered from split personality disorder which caused him to act out in ways he later regretted.

“He is disgusted at himself,” he said.

Magistrate Trevor Morgan sentenced the man to two years of probation and told him a single breach would send him straight to jail.

The conviction was recorded.
