A father of six children has today been sentenced to a period of imprisonment following a break-in at the Humpybong State School.

Scott Thomas Williams, 32, pleaded guilty to 13 charges at the Sandgate Magistrates Court which included possession of dangerous drugs, entering a premises and committing an indictable offence and wilful damage.

The court heard Williams broke into the Humpybong State School in Margate and damaged the school gate, the CCTV camera and an elevated work platform between October 10 and 13 2020.

Civilian prosecutor for the police prosecution Patrick Carey said the school was a “valuable public institution and they were lucky that all (the breakages) were within the capacity for the groundsman to repair”.

Lawyer for the defence Andrew Ferrett told the court Williams had been assessed by a clinical neuropsychologist who determined he was in the first and lowest percentile for intelligence, a factor which has been compounded by substance misuse.

“He has spent time homeless and obviously battling mental health issues,” Mr Ferrett said.

Police found cannabis in Williams’ possession on October 14 in Sandgate, a charge for which he also pleaded guilty.

Magistrate Jennifer Batts said Williams had a “checkered past” that has been slowly getting worse since 2007 and warned him he would be at risk of serving further jail time should he continue down that road.

“There’s a level of chaos in your life that will take some addressing,” she said.

Williams told the Magistrate, via videolink, that he was trying to stay out of trouble.

Ms Batts sentenced Williams to 43 days, two months and three months imprisonment for each of his three charges of failure to appear in court.

For entering the school and damaging the property, Williams received four months imprisonment.

Williams had served 43 days in pre-sentence custody and was therefore awarded immediate parole.

Due to an issue of totality, he was convicted and not further punished for the remaining offences.
