Deception Bay man does burnouts, almost crashes while four times over limit

Police have slammed a father-of-two for “driving like an idiot” through Burpengary, endangering the lives of others by doing burnouts while four times over the limit.

A Deception Bay father-of-two was slammed for “driving like an idiot” at Caboolture Magistrates Court after he pleaded guilty to one charge of dangerous operation of a vehicle on Tuesday.

Police were dealing with another motorist when they heard and saw the smoke from Jeremy David Elmes, 27, doing burnouts on Buckley Rd in Burpengary just before 10pm on Saturday, May 20.

According to police prosecutor Peter Mitchelson, Elmes was seen to be travelling against the flow of traffic as he continued to do the burnout, moving south on Buckley Rd, spinning around and “narrowly avoiding lights and signage” near Morayfield Rd.

“Police then saw the vehicle at the traffic lights five minutes later, and when they turned green (Elmes) conducted another burnout, narrowly missing sideswiping other vehicles,” Sgt Mitchelson said.

Elmes blew a blood alcohol reading of 0.219, more than four times over the legal limit in Queensland.

“He was driving like an idiot for someone of his age who should know better.”

Lawyer for the defence told the court the “hooning behaviour was a way for (Elmes) to let out his frustration” after an argument with his partner earlier than evening.

The incident was described as a “wake up call” for Elmes, who has undertaken counselling in an effort to rehabilitate his alcohol use.

Elmes was fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for 18 months.
